the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,

and by his wounds we are healed.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray,

each of us has turned to his own way;

and the LORD has laid on him

the iniquity of us all. (Isa. 53:5–6)

By sending Jesus, God brought His rescue effort to a whole new level. Instead of dealing with sin the same old way, with a system of sacrificing lambs and other animals, God Himself provided the lamb—the Lamb of God, Jesus. As a result, our sins were washed away (1 Cor. 6:11), and God has removed our sins as far as the east is from the west (Ps. 103:12).

In Jesus, God ushered in a new covenant. Remember what Jesus said at the Last Supper? “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22:20). What He meant was that, through Him, God faithfully brought salvation, just as He did before. But this time He offered a radical operation that dealt with sin at the deepest possible level—our hearts.

“This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel

after that time,” declares the LORD.
